Goal Setting is more than SMART goals
or a daily checklist.
The SMART goal concept gives people the fundaments of this important life skill. Often the SMART goal program is used in a quick, half hour segment on goal setting within a much larger program (i.e. character education, workplace skills bullying, drug & alcohol programs).
However, if your goal is to help students make goal setting a new life habit, then you should consider a more robust program.
The Goal Setting for Students book gives students more actionable material than the SMART goals program offers.
What are the SMART Goals Concepts?
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable
R = Realistic
T = Timely
Will an 8th grader really understand these concepts enough
to implement the SMART goals into their daily life?
We believe that education is a collaborative effort among teachers, parents and students. The Goal Setting for Students program is school specific and is divided into eight sections:
- What is Success
- Principles of Goal Setting
- Samples & Practice
- Investing in Yourself
- Measuring Your Progress
- Meeting the Challenges
- How to Get Started
- Summary
The strength of the Goal Setting for Students book is its discussion-based format, which involves students, teachers, and parents in each of the eight chapters. This goal setting program can be built into virtually any curriculum. It can be used alone or with the Goal Setting for Students PowerPoint presentation oras a self-development tool.
Each chapter has real world examples the students can relate to and open-ended, discussing stimulating questions to help you discuss various life skills with them.
One last thing about SMART goals. The SMART goals program is good “first pass.” Because of it, many people know about the importance of setting goals. We simply believe that most people and particularly students need more step-by-step “how to” information.
